Monica Avendaño Hernández, Barrio de los Piedras, Oaxaca
Monica Avendaño Hernández was born in 1991, and is the third generation of Mixteca women to create textiles using the backstrap loom in her family. This type of weaving is a very important part of her community and culture, and she does not want it to be lost.
Monica learned from her mother, who learned from her mother, to weave using this method. Monica works with her family to create and embroider textiles, including huipiles, rebozos, scarves, napkins, tablecloths, cushions, etc.
