Alebrijes

Zeny Fuentes Santiago & Reina Piña Ramírez, San Martín Tilcajete, Oaxaca

Zeny Fuentes is a Zapotec Indian and 4th generation alebrije woodcarver from San Martin Tilcajete, Oaxaca, Mexico. He began carving and painting when he was seven years old and works alongside his wife, Reyna Piña Ramirez, and their four children, Fatima, Laura, Mary Guadalupe , and Zenen. Together, they create some of the most detailed and unique Oaxacan carvings available. Each alebrije carving is one-of-a-kind.

The alebrije is a “spiritual and fantastic being” that represents the soul. It is believed that every human being that is born is accompanied by an animal that will guide and protect him/her during their life. The alebrije is capable of fulfilling the most desired wishes. They acquire animal form and develop through our thoughts and feelings. Almost all alebrijes have wings, which represent the freedom to think and feel. The variety and intensity of colors
represent the multiple emotions that a person can experience throughout his life.
