Venito Pérez López & Ingrid Pérez Hernández San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas
Venito Perez Lopez comes from Huistan, a Tzotzil village in Chiapas. In 1991 he joined the Mesoamerican Jade Museum and learned the basics of jewelry making and working with semi precious stones and amber. He is a first generation artist who now works as an independent jeweler.
Amber can be found in several areas of Chiapas, but Simojovel is the amber capital. Chiapaneco amber is one of the best in the world and comes in various shades, from pale to dark yellow and red. Amber can also have a green hue, although the green is actually yellow or brown amber over red. Some amber pieces have moss and insects imprisoned in them.
Venito's teachers were from El Salvador and Guatemala and he has passed on his knowledge to his wife, children and son-in-law. Several of his pieces are in the Mesoamerican Jade Museum and he and his children have participated and won many awards in state and national competitions.
His work team includes 10 artisans, all members of his family. He designs the jewelry and is the one who finishes and approves the process, although there may be several people involved in the whole process before a piece is finished.
