Salvador Barrera Hernández is originally from Nuevo Casas Grandes in Chihuahua, Mexico where he grew up near the archaeological zone of Paquimé Casas Grandes. This is where Juan Quezada, the self-taught originator of Mata Ortiz pottery, first started making the thin-walled, finely painted ceramic ware that has come to rival any handmade pottery in the world.

It was from here, that Salvador had the inspiration of framing Mata Ortiz pottery into jewelry. Using copper and a mixture of .950 silver and copper, he began to make his jewelry that were, at first, crude, but over time, he improved the designs and finish. Now, as he says: "Our work is notable and defines us through its character and strength". Since 2000, his pieces have merged the art of Mata Ortíz, with that of Taxco. He and his wife lead a group of more than 20 families where each person contributes to elaboration of the pieces they work on. This work has helped Salvador improve his quality of life and that of the others who work with him.
