Ricardo Cortéz Rodríguez San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato
Ruth Cortéz Rodríguez passed away in 2022 in the state of Guanajuato. She was an extraordinary artisan who created using alpaca, or alpaca silver, which is the trade name for nickel silver and electroplated nickel, used mostly in Switzerland, Germany and Scandinavian countries.
Her son, Ricardo, is following in his mother’s footsteps and continues her work. The metal used contains 10% silver, with varying percentages of copper, zinc or nickel. It is a beautiful alloy, which increases in luster with sunlight, cleaning and daily use. Due to its unique composition, the metal does not oxidize, lose its luster over time, or peel.
Ricardo, like his mother, are innovators in alpaca, with designs ranging from traditional to more modern. Many of his pieces are inspired by Mexican folk art. He is a silversmith extraordinaire, who puts charm and imagination into every piece of his work. His pieces can make beautiful gifts and, being easy to care for, become a folk art treasure.
