Inocencio Pérez Iturbide is from Tenango de Doria, Hidalgo. This area of Mexico has rain for at least a third of the year, which makes cultivating the land difficult. This mountainous region has little usable farmland and so Inocencio’s maternal grandparents, José and Selerina, dedicated their lives to hand-embroidered textiles using ancestral techniques that were transmitted from generation to generation.

Inocencio’s mother learned this trade when she was approximately 12-years-old, and had the natural ability to re-create in multi-colored thread the figures she had observed in the mountain caves where shaman made offerings long ago. Capturing these Otomí images in her embroidery and giving them life, impressed others who would see her work.

When Inocenio was six-years-old, he started to imitate his mother’s work. As time went by, he began to perfect his own technique, and without realizing it, began to give his own special character to his work. It is considered so unique, that it would be difficult to replicate — his combination of colors and subject matter are unique to him. He takes great pride in preserving his art and culture and the work comes from his heart. His wife coordinates production, while Inocencio’s designs elaborate and bring the work to life.
