Guadalupe García Ríos, Tzintzuntzan, Michoacán
Guadalupe García Rios lives in the village of Tzintzuntzan near Lake Pátzcuaro, one of many Michoacán towns continuing a living tradition: alfarería (pottery making).
Clay is abundant in the hills and many Purépecha dedicate their lives to creating both utilitarian and artistic pottery. All of Guadalupe's creations are using the high-fire ceramic technique, fired at over 1250 degrees centigrade and lead-free. Her extremely complex three-dimensional work is crafted on a non-electric wheel and fired in a gas kilnShe is rapidly gaining recognition as a much sought after high quality producer of ceramics. Her unparalleled designs are inspired in part by pre-Hispanic Purépecha symbols and designs but also from the countryside and nature.
The high volcanic peaks, lakes, wildlife and other environmental elements in the state of Michoacán also figure prominently in her expressions of this region. She feels as she creates each piece, she is giving back to the earth that makes her art possible.
