Epifanio Gómez Jiménez Santa María Tlahuitoltepec, Oaxaca

Epifanio lives in the Mixe pueblo of Santa Maria Tlahuitoltepec, Oaxaca, about a two-hour drive northeast of Oaxaca City. This pueblo is probably the most well-known for its music school, CECAM (Centro de Capacitacion Musical y Desarrolo De La Cultura Mixe).  However, it is also known for its textile traditions, which include back-strap woven wool serapes and bags, as well as pedal-woven and naturally dyed cotton rebozos (shawls) and machine embroidered blouses and shirts.

In 2002, Epifanio studied with Bonifacio Vásquez, a master craftsman in his pueblo, to learn techniques particular to the spinning of wool and weaving rebozos.  When he made the decision to make textiles his career, he opened his own studio.  He now runs the studio with his wife and children.

Epifanio won Second Place in a textile competition in Morelia for his hand-woven rebozo colored with dye from the linden-tree (also called basswood, belong to the genus Tilia, a tall tree with fragrant yellow flowers).
