Masks

Antonia Rodríguez Sánchez, San Marcos, Ocosingo, Chiapas

Antonia Rodríguez Sánchez, Is a talented Tzeltal artisan from the
Ocosingo area. She married into a family from the nearby town of Sibaca where she learned how to make leather masks from her father- in- law. She and her family live in San Marcos a nearby ejido at the end of the paved road, past the town of Sibaca.

It is believed that the masks were used up to the 60 s in Sibaca for the carnival but disappeared. Her father-in-law was fascinated by the masks and started making them in the 70´s. Her sister-in-law family and her family are the only families in the areas making these masks that are very different from any other masks made in Chiapas.

The masks are made of cow skins and are decorated by burning some of the hair with designs inspired by plants, flowers and natural elements. They are can also be decorated with feathers.

Antonia also makes articulated clay dolls which she dresses with
traditional outfits as well as games made of clay used by the local children and adults.

All the women in the family also embroider their own clothes and make traditional embroidered outfits which they sell in Ocosingo and other parts.

Antonia has won several awards from local and national competitions for both her clay dolls and leather masks.

The whole family is involved in the process of masks making and
embroidering.
