Rosario Nuñez Flores, Tenancingo, Mexico
In Ixpuichiapan, Tenancingo, in the State of Mexico, the tradition of the rebozo has been strongly preserved, so it has become one of the most accessible sources of work. Ixpuichiapan is well known for their great quality in the elaboration of rapacejos or borders / ends of the rebozos.
When Rosario´s mother lost her father, she had to teach her daughters from a very young age the art of stitching rebozos to contribute to the support of the household. Rosario started stitching rebozos when she was 10 years old, which is fundamental and the last step for the elaboration and definition of a rebozo.
Rosario says that she has always been very restless, and wanted to be original and different. When she was little, her mother scolded her for innovating, but over time, she noticed that her works sold faster because they were different. She has been sought after to make many beautiful shawls, among them Evaristo Borboa Casas (a Mexican master weaver). All this work has earned her the 2016 Presidential Award for Popular Art.
Her work now focuses on the rescue, dissemination and preservation of the various techniques to make rapacejos or rebozo tips. Currently she is master of the single color stitching, the combined (two or more colors), the chaquira and the split cord. The latter she rescued from the opportunity to observe a work of about 100 years old, it consisted of beautiful butterflies that she was able to replicate successfully, with this technique she have been able to innovate and make many vegetable, animal and geometric designs.
Currently she is also dedicated to teaching what knowledge she has acquired, passing this knowledge to the new generations with the intention of not losing the tradition.
She and her family are working with about 30 families of rebozo artisans who live in Calimaya and Tenancingo, who do some of the 12 steps for the elaboration of a rebozo.
