Rosa Margarita Enriquez Bolom, Huixtan, Chiapas
Rosa Margarita Enriquez Bolom was born in 1981 into a family involved in textiles. She started embroidery at the age of 8, learning from her mother, who learned from her mother, and so on. Embroidering was taught to them by the Spaniards, before that, they also wove their clothes but the weaving knowledge was lost, and as they live in a warmer climate they make clothes with manta cloth and embroider the manta.
Rosa´s son is 12 and he knows how to embroider, as does her husband. We also work with 5
women who mostly embroider while Rosa designs the clothes and assembles them. She also embroiders to illustrate new designs to the five women she works with.
Huixtan was and is famous for its embroidery but it is disappearing little by little, but Rosa believes it is important to keep this tradition alive.
Rosa says ¨The embroidery represents Huixtan and we cannot let it die, so it is very important for me to teach younger generations to embroider in our style to preserve our indigenous culture. My interest is to preserve it by showing people what we still do in our village.¨
