Román Gutiérrez Ruiz, Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca
Román Gutierrez Ruiz is a master textile artist from Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca, recognized for his work preserving and expanding traditional weaving and natural dye techniques. He began weaving at the age of twelve, learning the sarape tradition from his father, and has since expanded his knowledge through research, international collaboration, and teaching in cultural institutions across Mexico.
His work is distinguished by the exploration of diverse materials and by the revival of historic textile techniques such as twisted feather spinning, a pre-Hispanic method that allows down feathers to be woven into textiles. Through his artistic practice, research, and teaching, Román continues to expand the possibilities of Mexican textile art while honoring the deep traditions of his community.
