Pascuala Vásquez Pérez, Grupo SNIEL, Zinacantan, Chiapas

Pascuala Vasquez  Perez comes from a small Tzotzil town called Zinacantan high up in the mountains above San Cristobal de las Casas.

In this town many of the men dedícate themselves to cultivating flowers and to selling them in Chiapas and as far as Yucatan and Mexico City.

The women supplement the family income with their weaving and embroidering. All wear clothes woven and embroidered sometimes by hand, sometimes by machine, showing off the flowers that are grown in the green houses above the town.

Traditionally the women were not permitted by the men in the family to leave town. So they united into informal groups and elected a representative to go out and sell for them.

Pascuala is the representative of her group that is composed of 13 weavers/ embroiderers including herself  and  12 women working with sewing machines at embroidering and making clothes.

The name of the group comes from the verb, urdir. They use a long stick to organize and measure the thread to weave later, is to urdir.

They all continue working in the traditional way with some innovation as the fashion of this town changes every six months.
