Juliana Marta Sernas Luis, San Bartolomo Ayauyla, Oaxaca
Juliana Sernas Luis was born in 1963. Her folk art began at the age of 8 years old when her mother Clotilde taught her to embroider napkins for the kitchen and the small flowers of our embroidery.
At the age of 12 she learned the most difficult technique, which is called Hazme Si Puedes, which she improved over time learning from her great aunts the technique of fraying, and from her mother to weave the edges of the blouses and the strips to join the sleeves and bodies.
The community of San Antonino Castillo Velasco captures in each artwork the flowers of their community, reflecting the work of their flower growers, as well as the palette of colors that are the inspiration of the flower gardens of the community. 200 people from the surrounding communities of San Antonino are involved in the embroidery of small flowers. Only her family and a team of women of the Aguja de Plata workshop use the techniques of Hazme Si Puedes, including hand drawing, crocheting and crocheting.
Juliana is the second generation working in San Antonino textile art, and it has been passed to the fourth generation of her grandsons and granddaughters.
Her art is an important part of her life because she can ¨leave to my descendants, both family and community, a cultural heritage of my ancestors¨ that also supports the economic life of her community and of her family.
