Juana Maria Arias Pérez, Tsobol Antsetik, Chixilton, Chenalho, Chiapas

Tsobol Antsetik (Women United) is a group of 25 women who weave and embroider. They use the warp loom as well as embroider the traditional Chenalhó embroidery and the simple pieces with social messages representing their ideology.

The group was formed twenty-five years ago by members of the Zapatista and Abeja movements. The movement of the Abejas was born in the municipality of Chenalhó as a pacifist movement in solidarity with the principles of the Zapatista movement.

As part of its political stand of resistance, the members neither receive nor ask for any help or participation from the Mexican government.

They sell their products through sympathetic movements, churches or friendly communal networks.

Christine Eber, a US investigator who lived in the house of one of the founders of the group while doing her research, is helping the group sell their products in the US.

Nowadays the daughters and granddaughters of the founders continue working in the same group. They still weave with warp looms and embroider the complicated stitches from Chenalhó as well as embroider bookmarks, napkins and purses with simple embroidery showing their political resistance.
