Isaías Jiménez Hernández, San Antonio Arrazola, Oaxaca
Isaías Jiménez Hernández, was born in 1961, in San Antonio Arrazola, Oaxaca. At the age of 12 he finished primary school, and began helping his father, Manuel Jimenez Ramirez, a first artisan of wood carvings of fantastic animals in Oaxaca, who had many orders from abroad. Isaías has been widely recognized for his wonderful sculptures and distinctive painting style in wood carvings of fantastic animals.
Today, he and 5 of his family members are in the workshop, he and his son Eleuterio Isaías Jiménez Carrillo carve and create the pieces, while his wife Nicolasa, daughter Viviana and two nieces are dedicated to the decoration of the works, in traditional styles and with greater detail as is the Zapotec symbology (grecas).
In 2007, Isaías Jiménez began to work on a museum-workshop in his father's house which was inaugurated in 2018 with representatives present from federal, state, and municipal governments. Called the Museum-Workshop El Tallador de Sueños (Museo-Taller el Tallador de Sueños), it was offered donations of Don Manuel's old works by collectors from all over the world.
Isaías Jiménez is currently in charge of directing the Museum and Workshop “El Tallador de Sueños” in his father's house. He continues to travel to different parts of the world to exhibit his works in the company of his son Eleuterio Isaías Jiménez Carrillo.
Visitors can observe the elaboration process, and he also teaches workshops on how to carve the wood and how to decorate alebrijes.
