Helí Samuel Cruz Muciño San Miguel Ameyalco, Lerma, Mexico
Helí Cruz Muciño, known as Pede Gui, was born in 1996. For 8 years he has been practicing the textile art of weaving and brocade on a backstrap loom because of the need to use these textiles in a traditional dance in his community that he has participated in for 20 years.
Initially, Pede Gui´s maternal grandmother and mother used to make the pieces that he used in the dance, but when his grandmother died, he asked his mother to teach him how to weave. At that time, there were very few people
doing it in his town, though It is known through a codex that since pre-Columbian times his community was recognized as a producer of textile art in backstrap loom. Today, there are about 5 people who do this type of weaving full time in his area.
Both the dance and the weaving are fundamental parts of his daily life, it sustains part of his identity and his spirituality, as well as his cosmovision.
In addition to selling his work, he also teaches weaving and
backstrap loom brocade workshops, in the hope that the art will not be lost.
