Luis Enrique Rodríguez Ribera, Santa María del Río, San Luis Potosí

Luis Enrique Rodriguez Ribera, was born in Santa María del Rio, home of the rebozo since 1589, located between the city of Queretaro and San Luis Potosi in the state of San Luis Potosi. Luis works as a member of a community workshop. He has been taught in the preparation of the rebozo, as have his parents and all previous generations, since 1800.

A rebozo takes approximately three months to finish weaving, as they are very complicated and laborious with 25 different steps in their creation. Enrique weaves authentic and unique rebozos. His talent, dedication and skill can be admired in the finished piece. He weaves in a synthetic silk called artisela and cotton, as natural silk is more expensive and difficult to obtain.

Enrique relates his sadness for the fact that: every day this tradition is closer to extinction, because the new generation is not attracted to this work; which requires time, complexity to its process, and the weavers are generally not well rewarded — it is simply not an economical trade.  In the markets it is already difficult to find handmade rebozos, machine-made are cheaper and faster to produce, although they will not stand the test of time as a hand-woven rebozo will.

Purchasing a rebozo from Enrique not only provides you with a beautiful piece of portable art, but also helps Enrique continue his craft. The value of these rebozos cannot be measured solely in economic terms; their value is in their cultural identity and tradition.
