Cooperativa de Artesanos Indigenas de Sonora (CAIS), Sonora, Mexico

The Cooperativa de Artesanos Indígenas de Sonora or CAIS, was recently established as the culmination of a project started by Lutisuc, a non profit organization, to support and expose the different crafts made by the indigenous groups of the State of Sonora.

The kikapus, cucapas, seris, mayos, yaquis, pimas and guarijíos, the seven groups that are present in Sonora, have made an effort to work together in the coop, which benefits them tax-wise and which allows them to sell their creations in a store in the city of Hermosillo.

The crafts they make are diverse, and range from spectacular baskets made from the fibers of the torote, a very rough and dry plant in the desert, sculptures made of palo fierro and palo blanco, to utilitarian baskets, clay pottery, embroidered textiles and jewelry made of glass beads.

The coop will bring a wide array of their creations to the Feria. Welcome! We leave you some links for further information on these spectacular crafts. You can find more information about the cooperative at www.lutisuc.org. If you are interested in watching a video about this incredible process and group of women, click here.
