Cecilia Gómez Díaz, San Andres Larrainzar, Chiapas
Cecilia Gómez Díaz , a young Tzotzil woman from the municipality of San Andres Larrainzar was born in a small community and grew up in a large family. She, early in life learned how to help her mother and started to weave with a strap loom at the age of eight. The money she earned weaving help with the expenses of sending her to school where she attended and graduated from high school.
She was trained and worked for several years with ATA the NGO teaching women around the world how to run a business. She was field coordinator and then became the President of the 250 women group called KIPTIK.
She received a first place in the state competition called Juventud ( prizes are given to outstanding youth )and also won prizes to go to show her art in France and Peru from the same competition.
She then got married and work with a small group as she wanted to have more time to develop her artistic side and wanted to work with natural dyes and experiment with diverse types of fiber. She had her work exhibited in CDMX by the Gallery MUY from San Cristobal who helps contemporary Indigenous artist to gain exposure locally and in other areas.
Cecilia and her group want to recue old icons and traditional weaving methods and keep the natural dyes technique alive as much has been lost in the last 50 years but they also want to innovate and produce pieces more modern and suited for our times. Her goal is also to give the women and men of the group the opportunity to make a decent living while safeguarding their cultural heritage.
She resides with her husband and two children in the town of San Andres Larrainzar.
