From the shores of Lake Pátzcuaro, chuspata is gathered to make the utilitarian and decorative folk weaving for the fiber art of Manuel Salvador Morales & Nicolása Esteban Ramos. Chuspata is a type of water lily/bulrush used by artisans in the region for the production of objects of daily use. The fibers are twisted, woven and joined together, sometimes covering a metal frame to give the object a permanent shape.

In this family’s collection of handcrafts, you will find baskets, bags, kitchen items, drawers, holders, and different figures of birds and characters, representing everyday images taken from their immediate and common environment. Chuspata products are usually woven in family workshops with materials obtained directly from the shores of the lake. These objects of great creativity and variety are marketed in artisan fairs and tianguis both in Michoacán and in the rest of the country.

Manuel and Nicolása have taken this craft to a new level, creating useful, sturdy items.
