Santiago de la Torre Velasco, Artesanias de la Torre, Venustiano Carranza, Chiapas
Santiago de la Torre is a Tzotzil weaver from the Venustiano Carranza municipality. In Chiapas. Santiago learned how to weave from the women of his family as weaving was traditionally a woman´s occupation. His mother, aunts and grandmother helped him learn how to use the warp loom to make the traditional brocaded fabrics typical of the area.
He works with seven women who are all part of his extended family. They use cotton and artisela, a thread made from cellulose, very often called silk as it has a high shine. They produce blouses, huipiles and rebozos. The group also makes brightly embroidered fabric that can be worn as a wrap or made into skirts. All the brocaded designs represent the different elements of nature as imagined and designed by the people of Venustiano Carranza.
The climate in the municipality is very warm so the garments are perfect for summer and warm weather. The weaving can be quite simple and rustic as well as fine and elegant.
