Omar y Miguel Fabian Pedro, San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca
Black Clay

Miguel Fabián Pedro
Coyotepec, Oaxaca

Originally from San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca, Miguel Fabián Pedro and his wife, Esther Canseco Morga, are master artisans from a family whose history is deeply rooted in the tradition of black clay pottery. Through years of working together in their family workshop, they have preserved and refined the techniques passed down through generations, creating pieces that reflect both the discipline of traditional pottery and their own artistic vision. Their work forms part of a living tradition that has made San Bartolo Coyotepec internationally recognized for its distinctive black clay.

Their pieces draw inspiration from the ancient Mixtec and Zapotec cultures, incorporating forms, symbols, and design elements that evoke the pre-Hispanic heritage of Oaxaca. Miguel and Esther have also played an important role in passing this knowledge to the next generation, teaching their children the techniques and values of the family craft. Today, their sons continue this tradition as the fourth generation of their family of potters, ensuring that the knowledge carried by Miguel and Esther continues to evolve while remaining firmly connected to its roots.
