Maximino Tapia Martínez
Pátzcuaro, Michoacán
Maximino Tapia Martínez is a master artisan from Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, dedicated to the intricate tradition of laca perfilada, one of the most refined forms of Mexican folk art. He discovered his passion for the craft at the age of fourteen and has spent his life preserving historic techniques while developing his own artistic voice. Drawing inspiration from traditions associated with the legacy of Vasco de Quiroga, Tapia Martínez creates pieces that combine delicate design work, 23.5-karat gold leaf, and fine oil painting.
His work continues a family tradition that spans generations. His parents, both recognized as Master Artisans, passed down their knowledge of laca perfilada, and today he is sharing those skills with his own children. Throughout his career he has participated in numerous exhibitions and competitions, earning multiple awards at the state and national level. Beyond the honors, his greatest pride lies in keeping this tradition alive, teaching the next generation, and representing his community through his art.
