Ma Cristina Navarro Cervantes Jamay, Jamay, Jalisco
From Jamay, Jalisco, Ma. Cristina Navarro Cervantes transforms natural fibers and paper into imaginative forms. Rooted in a family tradition of working with tule, she has developed a personal practice that blends inherited knowledge, ingenuity, and nature based materials.
Her first piñata—a turtle crafted from newspaper—launched a creative journey that now includes two- and three-dimensional figures made from corn husks, water hyacinth, seeds, and papier-mâché.
As the only artisan in her community producing this type of work, Cristina creates not simply as a profession, but as a way of shaping her story and sustaining the creativity she learned at home.
