Juan Vázquez Menor is a master artisan from Temalacatzingo, Guerrero, a Náhuatlspeaking community renowned for its centuries-old tradition of maque and lacquerware. He learned the craft as a child by watching his mother prepare natural pigments, developing a deep knowledge of the plants, minerals, wood, and gourds that give life to his work. Today, he proudly continues this family tradition, passing his knowledge on to his children and grandchildren.

Working alongside his family, Juan creates beautifully decorated gourds, wooden pieces, and lacquered objects using techniques rooted in pre-Hispanic tradition. His mastery of natural materials and refined designs has earned him national and international recognition, including First Place in the Maque and Lacquer category at the 2025 Gran Premio Nacional de Arte Popular. Through every piece, Juan preserves one of Mexico's oldest artistic traditions while ensuring it continues for future generations.
