Juan Carlos Jalisco Jarilla, Kalu Jarllla, San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas
Since Juan Carlos Jalisco Jarilla was a child he saw his mother embroidering, cutting fabrics, and also drawing the ancient patterns, inherited from their ancestors, as well as making the beautiful stitching. That made his love for his culture grow and he began to make his first designs and embroidery, and give it to anyone who was interested, as well as supporting the maestras and maestros to show their art to the world.
Their art is passed down from generation to generation, Juan´s mother is the third generation and he is the fourth to continue preserving their techniques. This art is an activity of their community, San Bartolome Ayautla.
The Kalu Jarilla collective was born for several reasons:
· to make their culture visible, through our pieces, their iconography and their meaning
· to show the faces of textile artists who live in anonymity
· to make a fair sale of their pieces, without intermediaries
· to show the time spent on elaboration and design of each piece
· with each purchase, to give the money to the artisan creator of the piece
They are located in San Bartolome Ayautla, and currently have more than 20 artisans.
They have grown little by little, rescuing pieces and techniques that had been
lost.
