José González Montoya was born in 1969 in Chiapas de Corzo. He along with his brother are the most famous wood carvers in Chiapa de Corzo. The family learned a 3 generations ago to carve Santos for the church. The most famous carvers of saints were maestros from Guatemala and they learned from those maestros and taught the art to the people of the town that is famous now for its wood carvers as well as amber carvers.

Currently, José and his son work together with one other person.
