Ignacio Zepeda Ramírez, Amatenango del Valle, Chiapas

Born in October, 1995, Ignacio is the son of don Antonio Zepeda López y doña Petrona Ramírez Gómez. A psychologist and educator by profession, he stands out in his work as a potter in his community as being interested in spreading the culture and traditions of his people through sculpture and painting in clay pieces.

Since the age of 13 he has been dedicated to working with clay, initially to pay for his studies, by selling in public markets near his town. People were surprised because in his town only women were allowed to work with pottery.

In 2016 Ignacio won first place in his state´s handicrafts contest for new designs. In 2017 he started working as an independent gallery owner along with his family members in his beautiful and picturesque village. Ignacio founded a cultural space called Bin Galería, ¨bin¨meaning lizard in the Tseltal language, as he is said to have the energy of a lizard described in Mayan mythology. Currently there are 11 people working with Ignacio, involving 5 families in his town.

Preserving the Mayan identity through pottery and its derivatives is part of the mission of Ignacio and his family. He works the sculptures trying to involve some legends of his people, the culture, the tradition, and the clothing. He is a lover of nature and animals, defends the environment, and reflects this is his artwork.
