Hortencia Rojas Martinez is from Metepec, in the State of Mexico, where she grew up in a peasant family since her father was dedicated to working the land cultivating corn, wheat, and beans. Since she was a child, she and her brothers were involved in this work which gave us the necessary income
to support the family and more than that growing up in this way made her love
the land and the fruits it gave.

When she came of age she met the man who would be her life partner and they decided to get married in 1990. He had been a craftsman since he was a child. They started a family and had three children, with the arrival of the youngest they had very large health expenses and needed more income. She talked to her husband and he replied; “If you want to try you can do it.” So in order to provide for her family during a bad patch she began to venture into the field of craftsmanship. It has become her passion and greatest pride because creating with her hands and capturing emotions and her creativity in each piece is something that in other careers can not be achieved.

Three generations of the family have been involved. Currently, Hortencia, and her son and daughter are all involved in the art production. Her son is in charge of grinding the clay, kneading and preparing the clay and pigments and burning with decoration. Her daughter is in charge of decoration and sculpture in
hortensia clay. Hortencia is the pillar of the family, in charge of the development and creation of pieces as well as the decoration, hand painting with coaulin and elaboration of pieces with a modern design in creation with patillaje and help as a family to create art in lead-free clay with a unique decoration.
