
Delfina García Hernández, Artelar, San Pablo Villa de Mitla, Oaxaca
The workshop was founded in 1920 by the great-grandparents of Delfina García Hernández. Her husband, Emiliano Méndez Aguilar, weaved on the backstrap loom since he was 7 years old. In 1962 Delfina married Emiliano Méndez and they had 9 children.
Emiliano bought his first loom and began to work on it, where he started the
different structures that distinguished him during his life, the dedication to
create new pieces and supporting him we founded the workshop “ARTELAR”.
Her husband Emiliano is no longer with them, but her children and grandchildren continue with his legacy. Of their 9 children, all learned the art of the loom, although some emigrated, the rest continue creating new pieces and innovating, they are the fourth generation.
Delfina’s children and grandchildren work the whole process of the design, creation of the pieces, from the elaboration of the bobbins, the warp to the weaving on the pedal loom. finishing, stitching and embroidering of the pieces. Deflina dedicates herself to the finishing and stitching of the pieces.
