Originally from Olinalá, Guerrero, Betzy Ived Castillo Espinal comes from a family deeply connected to the tradition of laca or maque, one of the most recognized forms of lacquerware in Mexico. She began learning the craft as a child by observing and assisting her parents, gradually developing her own artistic voice within this traditional technique.

As the fifth generation of artisans in her family, Betzy continues this legacy while working collaboratively with other families in her community who participate in different stages of production. While some prepare pigments or craft the wooden boxes, Betzy focuses on dyeing natural earth pigments, painting, and decorating each piece, transforming the wooden surfaces into vibrant works that reflect both tradition and personal expression.
