Diana Quetzal Hernandez Lugo, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato
Folk art has been a part of Diana´s life for as long as she can remember. Her father was a cartonería (traditional cardboard craft) artist, and her mother always supported him with sales and managing the business. But Diana didn’t think about following in her father´s footsteps until she went to a fair her father was participating in, and something changed. She saw the connection that people had with his pieces, and it moved her deeply. She saw many Americans of Mexican descent who were very happy and emotional when they saw their art, and she wondered why she didn´t appreciate it more as part of the Mexican culture worth preserving.
Since then, she decided to continue her father’s art legacy. She is very happy and at peace with her decision… using her creativity, working with her family, continuing to preserve their culture, and providing work for women in her community to allow more financial freedom.
There are nine people in the workshop. Diana and her father are the designers and create the first piece, with the others assist in molding, papering, priming, then also painting subsequent copies -- applying glue, lacquer and other details.
Diana’s father and the workshop have won several awards, as well as invitations to exhibitions, presentations, and similar events.
