Martina Avila Morales, Pinotepa Nacional, Oaxaca

Martina Avila Morales was born in Pinotepa Nacional, Oaxaca, a place where the ethnic group is the Mixteca and where there is still a predilection for weaving using the back-strap loom and the tradition is to decorate the neck of the garments they weave with hand embroidery.

Martina learned to embroider at the age of eight, practically alone, watching the hands of the older women while they worked the needle and thread, capturing figures on the cloth. She also knows how to weave on the back-strap loom, but prefers to concentrate all her creativity and quality on her embroidery work.

She used to embroider just for her community but has gained recognition for her work elsewhere, which has led to strengthening her reputation as a Mixtec embroiderer and with it, transfor a hobby into a lifestyle with which she can give free rein to her ability and creativity.

Martina is featured in the landmark book, “Grandes Maestros del Arte Popular de Oaxaca,” published by Formento Cultural Banamex.
