Wilmer Levi Sosa Méndez, San Pablo Villa de Mitla, Oaxaca
Almost 10 years ago Wilmer Levi Sosa Méndez had the opportunity to learn to weave on the backstrap loom, from that moment the threads have been part of his life.
Years later a great uncle taught him the ancient technique of “corn” originally from his community. Later he learned to weave on the pedal loom which led him to continue creating more pieces.
When he participated in a project with the Textile Museum of Oaxaca (MTO) his art began to take a different direction. He began to incorporate the use of dyeing
techniques with natural dyes, new weaving techniques, spinning and also
innovation in the theme of the pieces, sewing shirts, ponchos and others
besides the traditional pieces such as shawls and huipiles, always looking for the highest quality in each of them.
In their workshop, they work with cotton and wool fibers woven on both the pedal loom and backstrap loom. They elaborate shawls, scarves, table runners, ponchos, shirts, huipiles, cushion covers, purses and bags, and they also make traditional blankets (enrredos and pozahuancos).
Wilmer’s paternal grandfather was an ancient Zapotec artisan as were all his great uncles and aunts. Though his parents are not dedicated to the creation of textiles, he has learned from his extended family.
The textile tradition of my community has a pre-Hispanic origin, the ancient techniques are part of our identity as Zapotec people, the techniques of dyeing, weaving and clothing still are a
fundamental part of our culture.
15 people work with Wilmer in their workshop. Eight weaving, 4 embroidering and finishing, 2 people sewing garments, and 1 person in various activities.
