The Merino family is well known in their community, San Pedro Amuzgos, Oaxaca as master weavers. The identity and traditions of the amuzgo people is reflected in their textiles, which are also woven by the children in the community, who are taught by their elders in order to preserve and express their culture and identity.

Laura and Odilón work with different types of cotton, green and coyuche, and use natural dyes only that are obtained from the purpura snail, the bark of some trees and different flowers.

Purpura is a rare purple dye called purpura that comes from a sea snail (caracol). The dye is obtained from the rocks on the rocky coast of the Pacific Ocean where the snails are found. The weavers take their yarns to the ocean where they gently "milk" the sea snail without harming it or its ecosystem. The result is used to obtain beautiful shades of purple.
