María Aragon Sánchez y Gloria Cruz Sánchez, San Marcos Tlapazola, Oaxaca
María Aragón Sánchez and her sister, Gloria Cruz Sánchez, were born in San Marcos Tlapazola, Oaxaca. Her mother tongue is Zapotec. A single mother, she has raised her son and daughter with the help of her sister, both of whom are studying medicine. Gloria has never married.
Both Maria and Gloria began working with clay when they were eight years old. They learned their craft from other potters who had learned the trade from their mothers. They collect the clay, clean it, sift it, make and bake all their pieces.
Maria's daughter is very creative and occasionally offers suggestions for designs. Designing the pots with faces was her idea. They have not submitted their work in competitions partly because they have been told they do not qualify. We do not know the reasons, as they did not explain them.
Their work is different from most of the work produced in the village, highlighted by the use of faces. The simplicity and shape of the pieces they produce are pleasing to the eye and the pocketbook. Their dishes can be used on the stove, in the microwave or in the oven and do not contain lead.
