Josué Eleazar Castro Razo, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato

Josué Eleazar Castro Razo was born in Chihuahua, but has been living in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, where he has his workshop. He is the first in his family to attempt making a living producing cartón (a heavier type of paper maché using paper torn from the outside of boxes), a well-known and admired Mexican folk art.

In 2011, he took traditional classes in cartón, mastering the alebrijes and catrinas technique in just a year. Since then, he studied mechanical engineering and has taught himself the art of making toys that move. He works with his wife, designing and creating his pieces.

Josué Eleazar was won more than 18 municipal and state contests, thanks to the creativity and quality of his toys. He has won seven national prizes, including the Galardón Nacional del Juguete Popular Mexicano en el 2017. He has been invited to participate in national and international exhibitions, as well to teach courses to children and young people. For several years, he has won the first prize in creatividad artesanal (creative artisan) organized by the Guanajuato state government.
