Jacobo Mendoza Ruíz, Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca
Born in Teotitlán del Valle, he grew up and has lived in that community of Zapotec origin, he learned the textile art at home, with his father Emiliano Mendoza who founded the workshop “MENDOZA” in 1970, where more than 10 weavers worked under the command of Don Emiliano, who made tapestry reproductions of great artists such as Rufino Tamayo, Francisco Toledo, among other great artists, in this workshop also began the oldest son of Don Emiliano, Arnulfo, who at an early age was enrolled in Fine Arts and revolutionized the textile, contributing elements of the Mexican Sarape. Jacobo, being the youngest son, saw from a very young age the weavers, brother and father, who inspired him to continue the legacy of the Mendoza family.
In 1997 Jacobo opened his own workshop to start his own path, without losing the basics learned with his father, he seeks to perfect the weaving and dyeing technique, reaching through time to have tapestries of incredible fineness and texture, because his tapestries use silk, merino wool, alpaca wool, even cashmere, threads that are brought from Japan, India, and Peru.
Thanks to this technique perfected in the tapestries, exhibition opportunities open up in the United States, in 2005 he participated in the “INTERNATIONAL FOLK ART MARKET” in Santa Fe, New Mexico, later traveling to the Natural Museum of San Diego, exhibited as a group at the University of Guadalajara, exhibited his work in galleries such as Folk Art Tree, La Vida Gallery, and the Museum of Masks and Ex - Fabrica la Aurora Art center in San Miguel de Allende. His pieces have been acquired by collectors from Miami, Belgium, New Mexico, Mexico City and Monterrey.
In 2015 and 2016 consecutively he won FIRST PLACE in the National Textile Contest, an award that was recognized by FONART, for his intricate and fine work.
Along with the evolution of the workshop of Jacobo Mendoza Sr., Jacobo Jr. was identified as a talented young man in the special edition book of GREAT MASTERS OF MEXICAN POPULAR ART 20 YEARS, published by Fomento Cultural Citibanamex, a foundation that is responsible for collecting Mexican folk art, promoting and disseminating it through exhibitions, conferences and publications.
Jacobo’s son began his apprenticeship in textile art at the age of 6 years, the youngest that has started in the Mendoza lineage in dabbling in textile art. In 2018 he received honorable mention in the contest sponsored by FOFA (Friends of Oaxaca Folk Art) based in New York, in conjunction with the State Museum of Folk Art of Oaxaca (MEAPO). In 2019 he was nominated for the Brandford/Elliott award of the “TEXTILE SOCIETY OF AMERICA” in the category of fine fibers. In 2020 he was included in the directory of the Great Masters of Mexican Popular Art publication. In 2022 he received third place in the contest sponsored by FOFA and MEAPO.
