Cuarto Suspiro, San Andrés Huayapam, Oaxaca
Cuarto Suspiro is a contemporary ceramic design and production workshop, the production is characterized by high quality utilitarian and artistic pieces with innovative proposals in high temperature ceramics.
The workshop is located in the village of San Andrés Huayapam, a magical place 25 minutes from the center of Oaxaca City. The process starts with the formulation of local clay, we use local, national and imported clay to obtain a mixture that withstands the firing temperature and is sufficiently plastic to be modeled, then we move on to the production techniques.
All the production techniques are handmade, they mainly use the pedal dal lathe and hand modeling, they also use forging and sgraffito and freehand drawing, once they have the pieces ready they wait for the pieces to dry to make the first burning, which is called sancocho.
The sancocho is done at 850º c, once the pieces are parboiled the enameling follows, it is done with minerals, ashes and metallic oxides such as copper, iron, cobalt and manganese, all the enamels are lead free. For the firing of the pieces they use a gas kiln and burn the pieces at 1250º c.
The workshop was founded by Brian Corres and Natalia Bolaños, both graduates of the school of crafts, together they mix their knowledge, techniques and styles to achieve unique pieces of great beauty. They have won some awards such as a third place in sculpture at the National Ceramics Award in 2013 and a first place in 2017 at the 2nd national meeting of young creatives: Artisans and designers in Mexico City. In 2018 they were selected by the national youth institute of Mexico City to improve their creative process in the Detonando Creatividad Program of the Institute for creative Exchange (ICE) in Toronto, Canada.
