Ubaldo Macías Bernabe grew up immersed in the world of traditional Mexican pottery, surrounded by clay, tools, and the steady rhythm of handmade work. From an early age he watched his parents shape jars, pots, and everyday objects in a home that also functioned as a workshop. What began as childhood curiosity gradually became a lifelong vocation, and today his work is both a personal passion and the economic foundation of his family. He finds fulfillment in every stage of the process—from forming clay by hand to decorating finished pieces with brush, paint, and imagination.

The tradition he carries has been passed down through four generations. As part of the third generation, he now works alongside his children, who represent the fourth, helping ensure the continuity of this living heritage. Rooted in Tonalá, Jalisco, his work draws from regional traditions such as petatillo pottery and Tastoan masks, both central to the area’s cultural identity. His workshop functions as a collaborative family space where multiple artisans contribute to the stages of forming, firing, glazing, and painting, and where he and his children have received several recognitions for their dedication to preserving Tonalá’s ceramic traditions.
