Silvia Olea Flores
Tlaquepaque, Jalisco
Silvia Olea is a third-generation ceramic artist from Tlaquepaque, Jalisco, a region internationally recognized for its pottery and folk art traditions. She works primarily with the distinctive barro betus technique, which she learned at the age of seven under the guidance of her grandparents, Paula Rodríguez Corona and Serapio Medrano Hernández. From an early age she discovered in clay a powerful means of expression—one capable of carrying memory, imagination, and emotion—while honoring the ancestral knowledge passed down through generations.
While deeply rooted in tradition, Silvia’s work also reflects innovation and creative exploration. Her artistic vision has earned recognition in regional competitions, including awards in 2008, 2015, and a Creativity Award in 2018 in Tonalá, Jalisco. She has participated in collaborative projects such as Talento Fusión and works with the collective Guardias de la Cultura to promote traditional arts through exhibitions and artisan fairs. Teaching is also central to her practice, and through workshops for children she encourages new generations to discover their own creativity through clay.
