Segundo de Jesús Suárez Coutiño
Chiapa de Corzo, Chiapas

Few artistic traditions in Mexico are as distinctive as the lacquerware of Chiapa de Corzo. As a member of a family dedicated to preserving this centuries-old craft, Segundo de Jesús Suárez Coutiño works with the rare natural lacquer made from aje, an insect-derived resin found only in southern Mexico. Through countless layers of lacquer and delicate hand-painted decoration, his work celebrates one of the country's most remarkable and technically demanding decorative arts while continuing a tradition shared across generations of his family.
