Julio César Cuevas Ortiz
Taxco, Guerrero
Master silversmith Julio César Cuevas Ortiz is a third-generation artisan from Taxco de Alarcón, Guerrero—Mexico’s most emblematic center of silverwork. Trained from childhood within a family deeply connected to the legacy of William Spratling, Cuevas Ortiz has spent more than two decades preserving and renewing the traditions of Taxco silversmithing through handmade jewelry and sculpture. His work is defined by technical mastery, thoughtful design, and a constant pursuit of innovation rooted in tradition. Committed to keeping Taxco silver relevant for contemporary audiences, he has developed a personal style supported by formal training in drawing and design. Throughout his career, Cuevas Ortiz has received more than 30 awards at municipal, state, and national levels, including multiple top prizes at the National Silver Fair and the prestigious William Spratling Award. Today, from his workshop in Taxco, he continues to lead by example—honoring a living heritage while mentoring future generations of silversmiths.
