(Xhana Compash Otol)
Amatenango del Valle, Chiapas
In the Maya Tzeltal community of Amatenango del Valle, pottery has long been the language through which women preserve culture, family, and identity. Juana Gómez Ramírez, known locally as Xhana Compash Otol, continues that tradition through expressive clay sculptures that celebrate the natural world.
Working alongside her extended family, she has transformed a childhood necessity into an internationally recognized artistic practice, ensuring that the knowledge passed down by her mother will continue for generations to come.
