Juan Jesus Rios, Villa de Alvarez, Colima

Juan Ríos was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco. When he was three years old, his family moved to Colima. His father's side of the Ríos family learned the art of working with clay in the pottery workshops of Chapala, Jalisco.

When they moved to Colima, Juan’s grandfather had already been working in pottery making for many years.
At that time, it was very common for people to find buried pieces and sell them to his grandfather. The demand for figures was so high that his uncles began to make them, as did his father, who was one of the youngest. And that is how, more than 70 years ago, the tradition of working with pre-Hispanic ceramics began in Colima. Juan is now the third generation, with almost 30 years since the day he made his first figures when he was 7 years old.

Juan won the only competition that has been held in Colima by the state government, obtaining first place.

Juan has been working for 14 years for the Museum of Popular Arts, with Ma. Teresa Pomar, University Museum of Colima, where he works with children, young people, and older adults, giving exhibitions and workshops and contributing to the dissemination of popular art. He reproduce pieces for the museum's collection to leave a legacy, as no one in his family will continue the tradition.
