
Juan Carlos Benitez Juarez, Taxco de Alarcon, Guerrero
Born in Taxco de Alarcón Guerrero, Carlos Benítez is heir to an important tradition of silver craftsmanship. He trained in the craft of silversmithing from childhood in different workshops around the city.
He specializes in different traditional Mexican silversmithing techniques such as filigree, inspired by the work of artisans from Mérida, Yucatán, Oaxaca, and San Felipe del Progreso, State of Mexico. His skill in working with precious metals and setting gems, combined with a special talent for creating mechanisms and clasps, as well as his use of modular design, enable him to create pieces that are steeped in tradition and innovation.
His talent and virtuosity have earned him two National Silversmithing Awards at the National Silver Fair in 2015 and 2017, the State Government Award in 2019 and 2021, and the William Spretling Award in 2020. He also won third place in the 2016 National Silver Award, as well as the Juan Ruiz de Alarcón y Mendoza Award in 2012, with exhibitions in the same years at the Casa Borda Taxco Cultural Center. Winner of the Diseña México National Design Award in 2021 and 2022, winner of the 2025 Sustainable Luxury Award in Latin America in the Metal Crafts category, among others.
He has been honored as one of the Great Masters of Silversmithing in Taxco and has taught various courses on filigree techniques at jewelry schools such as Plata Laguna del Tec de Monterrey in Torreón Coahuila, Tec de Monterrey Campus Guadalajara,
Tec de Monterrey Campus Toluca, 925 Plata Studio CDMX, Diploma in Popular Art at the Morelense Museum of Popular Art, Diploma in Mexican Filigree at the San Agustín Arts Center in Oaxaca 2022, 2023, 2024, Cervantino International
Festival 2019, Seminar for Artists, Designers, and Artisans in Taxco, Faculty of Arts and Design, UNAM Taxco, among others.
He is recognized by the Filigree Documentation Center in Italy as one of the best exponents of this technique in Mexico.
