José Juan García Aguilar
Ocotlán de Morelos, Oaxaca
José Juan García Aguilar is a third-generation ceramic artist from Ocotlán de Morelos, Oaxaca, whose relationship with clay began in childhood while working alongside his parents. For more than four decades, he has developed a distinctive artistic voice rooted in family tradition and inspired by his imagination, memories, and dreams. Each piece is carefully handcrafted and fired in an ancestral adobe kiln, preserving techniques that have been passed down through generations.
His work explores a remarkable variety of subjects, from hybrid animal figures with skeletal faces and representations of Oaxacan Virgins to traditional dances, portraits, and his celebrated Frida series. Working alongside his family, José Juan continues the collaborative spirit of Oaxacan folk art while sharing his creations in museums, galleries, and private collections in Mexico and the United States. Through his ceramics, he offers a vivid expression of Oaxaca's cultural heritage and a glimpse into his own creative world.
