The work of Horacio Gavito Pérez is shaped by a deep connection to the cultural traditions of Michoacán and Oaxaca, passed down through family heritage. At the age of twelve, he began his artistic training working alongside Wendell Riggs, founder of Bazar Sábado—the first artisan market in Mexico—at a shop dedicated to Mexican folk art, where he learned the specialized craft of creating dioramas. 

Born in Tamazulapan, a Mixe community in Oaxaca, Gavito Perez works within the broader Oaxacan artisan tradition, drawing on regional cultural narratives through detailed dioramas that combine craftsmanship and storytelling. His workshop operates as a small collaborative team of three people, each contributing to different stages of the process—from shaping the figures to constructing and painting the boxes and completing the final composition. Although relatively new to competitions, his work has already received recognition with an honorable mention at Xcaret.
