Originally from the Zapotec community of Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca, Christian Mendoza Ruíz is a textile artisan and artist who continues a long tradition of wool weaving. He learned to weave at the age of eight in his family’s workshop, guided by his grandfather and father, who taught him the fundamentals of the pedal loom and the traditional designs of his community. Since then, weaving has become a central part of his life and cultural identity. 

Alongside his weaving practice, Christian has developed a deep interest in the natural dyeing of wool, knowledge that was passed down to him by his mother. Using pigments derived from plants, insects, and minerals, he creates pieces that reflect both Zapotec tradition and his own artistic exploration. Through participation in competitions and his work teaching community workshops, he seeks to share this knowledge with younger generations and contribute to the preservation of an ancestral textile tradition.
